WaveX Gets $2.4 Million Grant from Australia’s Cooperative Research Centre

Australian wave energy company WaveX has received a grant of AUS$2.4 million (about USD$1.6 million) from the country’s Cooperative Research Centres Projects.

The three-year grant will allow the company to work on the development of unique anchors for offshore wind and wave energy, evaluating the performance of helical piles as shared anchors for the company’s WaveX D-Spar technology. It is working in collaboration with the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and the University of Western Australia (UWA). nCRC-P grants support industry-led collaborations between industry, researchers and the community. The focus is on research and development that will have commercial uses.

With a theoretical potential of 30,000 terawatt hours (TWh), and a resource that covers over 70% of the planet, wave energy has the potential to be the world’s largest source of energy if technology developers can solve its challenges.

Tank testing at the University of Western Australia validated the company’s system and numerical models, and WaveX is accelerating toward a large-scale deployment by 2025.
