California City Passes Unanimous Vote to Ban Single Use Plastics

Coronado, a city in Southern California, has passed a unanimous vote to ban polystyrene and single use plastics in the city. It joins some 500 municipalities in 28 states with some form of plastic restriction, though many of those have banned plastic bags only rather than all single use plastics.

Coronado is surrounded by coastal waters and marine ecosystems. Polystyrene and single use plastics do not biodegrade and will accumulate indefinitely leaking into the local water supply and pose a risk to marine and other wildlife.

The ordinance covers multiple banned items:

  • Single use plastic foodware(plates, serving trays, plastic cups)
  • foodware accessories(plastic silverware, )
  • Plastic bottled beverages
  • Non-reusable plastic bags (retailers must provide multi-use or paper bags)
  • Balloons that hold gas that is lighter than air.

The ordinance will primarily affect food service providers retail establishments.  bBalloons that are filled with a gas lighter than air can not be sold in the city, including from wholesalers, retailers, or third party vendors.

Each violation of these regulations will be considered an infraction. With each regulation that isn’t adhered to, being considered a separate violation.
