Korean Shipper HMM Tests Onboard Carbon Capture

Korean shipper HMM has announced that its Onboard Carbon Capture System, designed to capture CO2 during vessel operations to prevent its release into the atmosphere is ready for operational testing.

Shipping contributes an estimated 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

Carbon capture is an emerging technology in which businesses capture CO2 emissions from chimneys, or from the air or water and process it to either be stored or used use it to produce various products from cement to industrial chemicals to fuels. An onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.

After conducting a feasibility study since April last year with SHI (Samsung Heavy Industries), Korean Register, and PANASIA, the company is now set to test OCCS on HMM Mongla, a 2,200 TEU containership. If successful, the company said, this technology would be able to play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry.

The company is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.
