Höegh Autoliners Joins Sustainable Markets Initiative

Norway’s Höegh Autoliners has joined the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), a private sector organization for sustainable transition founded by Britain’s King Charles III. Companies joining the initiative are expected to sign a mandate called the Terra Carta to align their corporate actions with common sustainable goals.

In creating the Terra Carta mandate, King Charles–then the Prince of Wales–said it “offers the basis of a recovery plan that puts Nature, People and Planet at the heart of global value creation – one that will harness the precious, irreplaceable power of Nature combined with the transformative innovation and resources of the private sector.”

Höegh Autoliners provides Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) transportation of cargo such as cars, high and heavy machinery, and breakbulk. The company has committed to cut its carbon emissions by more than 30% from 2019 to 2030 and reach net zero by 2040.

“Höegh Autoliners is sailing for sustainability, “said Chief Executive Andreas Enger. “We have invested billions of dollars in the world’s largest and most environmentally friendly car carriers, formalised and accelerated ammonia partnerships, and overhauled our entire fleet through a green renewal programme.”

The company has ordered four Aurora class vessels to be delivered in 2027 that, rather than using conventional fossil fuels with the capacity for lower-carbon fuels, will be able to run net zero on ammonia directly from the yard.

“Welcoming Höegh Autoliners to the Sustainable Markets Initiative marks a pivotal step toward a greener future,” said Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative. “Their leadership in sustainable shipping, from advanced biofuels to ammonia-ready vessels, underscores the critical role of maritime innovation in decarbonizing global supply chains and achieving our shared vision for a thriving, sustainable planet.”
