Singapore Oceanarium to Open as Aquarium-based Conservation Institution

Singapore Oceanarium, previously known as the SEA Aquarium, plans to open at the end of July. The new facility will be three times larger than its predecessor and mark the transition into an aquarium-based conservation institution. It is part of a USD$5 billion of Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) resort. The aim is for Singapore Oceanarium to be Asia’s leading aquarium-based conservation institution.

The institution intends to accelerate conservation efforts for vulnerable species, support relevant authorities to enact policies on sustainability, and tackle issues affecting the ocean and leading to ecosystem damage and biodiversity loss. Finally the institution is designed to raise awareness of the current threats to the ocean including pollution, over exploitation, and climate change.

To do this the Oceanarium will work with a number of partners including the National University of Singapore (NUS). This partnership will assist in positioning Singapore and the Singapore Oceanarium a center point for ocean conservation efforts.

The Oceanarium will offer 22 immersive zones depicting the evolution of marine life. Grant Abel, the Oceanarium’s assistant vice-president of life sciences, said the institution aims to tackle issues ranging from pollution to over-exploitation, which have “taken a devastating toll, leading to widespread ecosystem damage and biodiversity loss.”
