BlueInvest, in partnership with EU4Algae, is hosting an online pitch competition on November 7, looking for five top projects in the algae sector. The application deadline is Thursday, 12 September 2024.Â
Algae, of which seaweed is one species, is a key source of blue carbon. It produces up to 70% of the oxygen in the air we breathe and absorbs up to 50% of the carbon dioxide we produce. It is also essential to aquatic food webs, providing a source of nutrients for invertebrates and fish. Algae can feed humans, reduces methane when fed to cows and other animals, can be made into biofuel, can be used as an alternative to plastics, and is used in fertilizer, cosmetics, supplements and more.
EU4Algae is an EU algae stakeholders forum that includes farmers, producers, sellers, consumers, technology developers, business-support organizations, investors, public authorities, academia, and researchers aimed at increasing the algae market in Europe.
BlueInvest is the European Union’s innovation and investment platform for the Blue Economy. It provides business coaching and fundraising support to early ocean technology companies to shift their ideas into marketable products and services. It also connects them to investors.
The pitch opportunity is for startups and small to medium-sized EU companies in the algae sector.
