Mexico and Chile Launch Bilateral Fisheries Training Project with Focus on Climate Change, Gender Equality

Mexico and Chile have launched a bilateral project aimed at strengthening fisheries co-management in small-scale fisheries. The project incorporates key principles such as gender equality, inclusion, technological training in aquaculture and fisheries, and adaptation to climate change.

Thirty-three representatives of Benthic Fisheries Management Committees, technicians, and researchers attended the first training session. The initiative is financed by the Chile-Mexico Joint Cooperation Fund and implemented by the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP) and the Mexican Institute for Research and Planning in Aquaculture and Sustainable Fisheries (Imipas), with support from the Chilean Agency for International Development Cooperation (AGCID) and the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (Amexid).

The project seeks to consolidate a learning network between fishing communities on Chiloé Island (Ancud Bay) and the state of Yucatán (Celestún, Sisal, Progreso, and Río Lagartos).

Over two intensive days, participants addressed four thematic modules focused on building learning networks, the fundamentals of fisheries co-management, the importance of fishermen-led monitoring, and the relevance of gender equity for more inclusive fisheries governance.
