New Center for Applied Innovative Aquaculture to Open in Mexico

The Center for Applied Innovative Aquaculture will open in La Paz, Baja, Mexico. The organization said it is the first to focus on sustainable warm water aquaculture.

The organization will unite researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs to accelerate applied solutions that restore oceans, feed people, and power sustainable coastal economies.

Founded by Wal-Mart heiress and philanthropist Christy Walton’s Innovaciones Alumbra, the center will focus on (re)generative aquaculture including open-ocean finfish systems, shellfish farms supporting mangrove restorations, and emerging restorative algae projects.

Recognized by UNESCO as a Learning City, La Paz is home to a dense academic and research network — UABCS (Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur), UABC (Universidad Autónoma de Baja California), CICIMAR (Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas), CIBNOR (Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste) and others — which the center hopes will create a strong foundation for collaboration and applied research and innovation.

The initiative has been joined by HatchBlue, Cunha del Mar, Baja Mar, Sol Azul and Innovasea.
