Swedish launch Ocean Next will convert seafood waste into seafood products by refining bones and hard tissues from fish and turning it into products such as fish nuggets, fish burgers, and fish balls that either significantly reduce the costs of the products or increase share of seafood.
A fully owned subsidiary of Ocean Collective, Ocean Next’s mission is to explore and accelerate sustainable blue food solutions, including seaweed, marine ingredients, and techniques to utilize side streams. The company plans to establish strategic partnerships in the industry with the aim of playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable ocean solutions.
“The vision of Ocean Collective and our group of companies is to change the perception of blue food amongst consumers, whilst never compromising on our core believes of healthy oceans, and consumer taste and appeal,” said Jergen Bergqvist, Group CEO Ocean Collective, and Executive Chairman of Korshags Food and Ocean Next.
A key to the circular economy is to put every part of the resource to use–a practice that is common among many indigenous people but not in modern industry where disposal seems less expensive than finding a use for the waste.
Ocean Next was formed following an exploration phase with Finnish foodtech company SuperGround to reduce food waste through processes and technology that could turn seafood waste into seafood products. The company aims to make it’s production, based in Falkenberg, fully regenerative within a few years.
