Finnish FuelEU Maritime compliance pooling solution Ahti Pool has partnered with ScanOcean to deliver a dedicated FuelEU Maritime pooling service to ScanOcean’s customers. The partnership lets shipowners use their own low-emission consumption to meet FuelEU compliance obligations while still accessing the wider Ahti Pool for additional flexibility.

FuelEU Maritime is a European regulation that sets maximum limits for the yearly average greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of the energy used by ships above 5,000 gross tonnage calling at European ports, regardless of their flag. It applies to well-to-wake emissions–all of a ship’s emissions from production of the fuel the ship uses to pulling into port. That is different from the EU ETS emissions which only apply from tank-to-wake, or from fueling onward.

Ahti Pool was designed for FuelEU Maritime. It allows shippers to pool costs and resources, especially for biofuels, and provides a marketplace for fuel, allowing members to buy and sell compliance, hence reducing costs and maximizing the benefits from low carbon ship assets. It manages fleets from owners and operators including Van Weelde Group, Bore, Spliethoff, Stenersen and Neste and oversees more than €100 million of emissions exposure.

ScanOcean will partner with Ahti to market and sell a turnkey FuelEU Maritime pooling service to shipowners, combining Ahti’s scale, technical pooling expertise and cost-optimization tools with ScanOcean’s logistics network, offtake agreements with leading refiners, and bunkering operations in the Nordic area.

“We are pleased to partner with ScanOcean to expand Ahti Pool’s capability to serve owners seeking fleet‑level compliance and cost certainty,” Risto‑Juhani Kariranta, CEO, Ahti Pool. “The pool‑in‑pool approach complements our turnkey model, enhances optimisation at scale and strengthens our ability to help shipowners reduce their emissions as well as materially lowering their risk exposure.”
